The Open Close 23.1

Welll what a first week it was in the Open! After registrations closed, CrossFit Claremont finished with the most sign-ups in WA! Congrats crew. Each person signed up is eligible to collect a new pair of customized NoBulls from the CrossFit HQ vendor booth at the CrossFit Games! You can do so on August the 3rd between 8.45am and 8.50am.


At 4am, as early risers awoke and Cooper finished his last game of FIFA, the workout was announced: a repeat from 2014 of a fan favourite.


Like a hotel buffet, there was a little bit of something for everyone. It came down to previous experience, what you ate during the day, how much you could stuff in your mouth and if you were willing to throw up afterwards. A real culinary experience. Whether it was your first toes to bar, a Power Clean PR or your first muscle up it was great to see everyone pushing and fighting their own battles within the workout. I think the workout really gave everyone a chance to work for their reps.

After last year's COVID chaos, having a full crew inside the gym getting after it and making a heap of noise, it was great energy and a lot of fun. It was great to hear how many people had a great time, especially people in their first Open. It was also a big plus to have so many people coming along just to watch. It added a lot to the vibe, so please come again or if you're thinking about it - come down! It was the first week 1 where every single person submitted their scores. Well done! With the factions looking to familiarize themselves with each other, the Green Team chat was hijacked by who they thought was Danny Moss (Sam). It started with:

He obviously had a few nerves (normal), but thankfully Adam made him feel right at home.


It didn't take long for Sam's excitement to build from lukewarm to boiling point. And he looked like he was going to be a serious acquisition. With a chassis like that he was a solid inclusion for Green purely as a rig-based selection at least.


Sadly after some continual calling, Sam/Danny had to leave.

Things Gary Heard: _ "I'm going again": Nate, 30 minutes after his previous attempt. Inspired by Conor's effort it appeared, he decided 14 minutes of maximal work was a good warmup. _ *Screams of Horror*: With 20 seconds left Pete had some arm pierced through the Ring like a vet reaching into a cow trying to pull out a calf. Thankfully he escaped with a smile (and a grip throw dummy spit). _ "I've only been engaged for a day and I'm already losing my fitness" - Ervin. (Congrats mate!!!) _ "Are Muscle Ups something that can be learned over a couple of sessions?" - Usaid _ "Guess I'll spend half the workout staring at the rings" - Lots of people who didn't get to stare at the rings. _ "The most attractive aspect has been the local community spirit at CFC. So many friendly faces and greetings from Dom, Molly, Noel, the coaches and many others" - Tarek. Thanks so much mate!! _ "I'll never get to the rings" - Nat, who got to the rings _ "Hell no, my cardio won't improve in 3 days" - Rita asked if she was doing it again. _ "Hey, I'm not up for the Open this year. I'd be happy to do the judge's course if you need any extra help. Be nice to be part of it still" - Claire D. _ "FOMO got me" - Claire D after submitting her score. _ "I'm carrying an injury" - Half of Blue team shortly after Wacey drafted them. _ "I'm trying to get my girlfriend to come down and try it" - Tristan, 60 seconds post WOD as his partner has a look of pure horror on her face.

Notable Performances: _ Congrats to Cristina, El, Lauren, Kayla, Britt, Kristina, Rebecca, Eimer, Fraser, Rob, Ben, Tristan, Tim, Marco, Cameron, Tarek and Ivan for all doing their first Open. _ Connor, Nate and Cooper for all getting Calories in the second round.


By the numbers: 0: Signed up people who didn't complete and log the workout. Also the number of tears (the author witnessed at least - a win!) 1: Muscle up for Jen, Stew, Pete & Pat. Massive effort!

5: Connor's place worldwide in the 16-17yo boys for week 1. 7: Emily's place worldwide for the Women's Upper Extremity. 9: Last minute Open Sign Ups.

26: Duncan's improvement since 2014 (The most I saw) 42: People throwing down in Friday Night Lights.

46: Toes to bar Roman Khrenikov got in the second round! 66: Total signups in the Open. 7 more than last year! Week 1 Standings: You know what they say: If you're winning week one, that means after the first week you're ahead of the other teams. When you see close finishes like this, it's good to scan through your team for people who you thought could have done better, and let them know they cost the team. Really let them have it and make them think about what they've done. 4th: Blue (2351 reps) 3rd: Purple (2378 reps) 2nd: Red (2408 reps) 1st: Green (2479 reps)


The people's team - Green, gets a nice start with a win in week 1. But with each team getting at least 2 new people for week 2, who knows how that might shake the leaderboard up!
