Open Close - Close of the Open

Welcome back for the final week as we close out The Open!

Over the gentle hum of various Laud recovery products on Thursday night (go to http://www.laudrecovery.com/ and use the code CLAREMONT10 for a discount), people went to sleep feeling safe and sound.

After a workout that was basically all squatting in week 1, and then a ton of lunges in week 2, there was an eerie sense of calm and safety for one's legs and lower body. CrossFit, operating under the ethos of  "broad times and modal domains", would hopefully throw us something heavy, but definitely nothing leg dominant...

WRONG!

"A Wall Ball almost identical to a Thruster" is only what an idiot would say! And what would an Open be, without a workout that is almost completely dependent on being able to do burpees!

As FNL loomed and the hours turned into minutes before kick off, there was the stark realisation that with strong participation rates comes a shortage of change plates. Emily and Mila were sent scrambling across Perth and pulled through with moments to spare.

Friday night popped off and Nate, took a page out of Lawson's "If I'm not going to beat it, I'm not going to do it" playbook, and decided not to turn up, leaving Red to go it alone. Castro proved once again he's a man of the people, and forbade athletes from having friends help them change weights, meaning we were also treated to a mental workout while at near max heart rate.

The stage was set, the coaches were up first and went out hot, (literally). Smothered in 'Perform Cream' for the first time on Friday night, all 3 who did lost 3 litres of water and ended up with heat stroke. The things you'll do fighting for the 11 000th (ish!) position in the world.

Despite it being week 3, sabotage attempts remained strong as Nat (team Gold), insisted Molly (team Red) was done with her burpees, only to stop her doing cleans, to bring her BACK to finish her remaining 2 burpees! Mental warfare at its finest!

Monday was a tough day. You were either doing it for the first time after thinking about it all weekend, or you were about to go through it again.. (and again if you're Jake who backed it up doing it twice within hours).

By the numbers:

2 - Jake's attempts in one day, the second attempt producing 12 more reps and a spew! Solid.

11 - Brett's WORLDWIDE placing in the 50-54 men!

15 - Women who qualified for Quarterfinals! Nearly half made the top 25%!

31 - Worldwide placement for once-a-year member and Jess's Hayes sister, Michelle!!

34 - CrossFit Claremont's overall placing in Oceania. Huge effort! If a few teams decline their invite, CFC might be going to the Torian Pro again!

23 - Men who qualified for Quarterfinals. Over half the men making the top 25% is a great effort! 34 - Cooper's Individual placing in Oceania, massive! Maybe he needs to do another podcast. For those who missed his first one, sadly, it was taken down by the WA Police.

Things Gary heard:

"Is that it?" - Brett in the team chat after seeing the workout.

"No point in changing strategy now, baby, I'm going unbroken!" - Lauren pre Friday Night Lights.

"Jeez, you need to learn to do burpees.." an ever supportive husband, Jason to Lauren after the workout.

"If that happened to me, I would have gone mental..." - Nat Danks unashamedly voicing her red mist tendencies.

"Ten seconds left!!!!" - Tom J essentially gave Hector an extra minute of workout time by calling 10 seconds left when there was really 1 minute and 10 seconds left.

"You all good to finish closing up from here?" Pete alpha-ed Adam with a rhetorical question in surgery on Friday evening. Poor Adam sadly wasn't in a position to negotiate.

"How far along are you?" - The anesthetist to Adam

"5 minutes further than when you asked 5 minutes ago" - Adam's response.

Adam put in the work and tried to make it to the final heat, but unfortunately, it wasn't to be. On the bright side - a successful surgery and no malpractice suits, so gotta take the good with the bad!

"Ne vous rendez pas comme nos ancêtres" - Quentin was judging Justine in French at the 9.15 class on Monday, and no one had any idea what was happening.

"Have we done the voting yet for best dressed?" Rose, who coincidentally then took out the title, and received an additional 10% to her score towards the faction total!

"Jase, I saw your score. Were you injured for 26.3?" Bobbie to Jason with genuine concern

"Nope"

Bobbie with the early morning flame just to make sure Jason's ego is in check! Probably needed more perform cream..

Notable Performances:

  • Tom found out on Sunday that your forehead doesn't need to touch the ground on every (or any) burpee...

  • After a big Friday night saving lives, Adam unfortunately had nothing left to give, and his back gave out during 26.3. It seems you can't do it all. After joining the gym again the day before the open, you can't fault his prep...

  • A big thanks so Liz who came in and helped run heats and keep things organised.

  • Thanks to Christine, Rose and others for the cookies and brownies!

  • Cheers to Milla who organised the Sauna recovery sessions on each Sunday

  • 26.3 fever took over with Scottie getting in a late submission for the 2-3yo category.

Week 3 results:

This year's winner is.... you'll have to come on Saturday night to find out!

Also come along to bid farewell to Kate E and Ben, who are heading off to Canada to run a maple syrup farm. They have been amazing people in the community, and now's your chance to tell them how you feel before it's too late!
