Wednesday 01.11.17 - Member of the Month 1/2: Mike Brooks

Mikey has been a part of the furniture for quite a while, you will see him generally at 6am during the week and Saturdays. A real success story with not only dramatic aesthetic changes but has improved all aspects of fitness! Always good to see his friendly face around.

When, how and why did you get started with us? I think it was about Feb or March 2014. I’d moved to Perth from living in Wellington and doing boot camps and Les Mills training. I’d had a busy year or two settling into Perth and not doing much (other than working and drinking and piling on the kilos) and needed to get fit again! Now I’m 17kg lighter than when I started!

What would be your dream workout? I like rowing, something where you can get aggressive with the bar and throw some weight around and hate double unders. So if a workout was named after me it would be a 30 Min Amrap row, heavy cleans and double unders. That’s a good balance of fun and something to work on

What workout would you want to avoid? Running and gymnastics are definitely not strengths, though actually I don’t mind either. My pet hate is a thrusters though, so any heavy thrusters need to go. Flight simulator also sucks!

Favourite Crossfit Athlete: After meeting Tia and Alethea at regionals they have moved up towards the top of the list. Pat Vellner seems like a good bloke. But the Icelandic girls are just too good, so Sara wins out!

Whats the best thing you own that cost under $100? Clothes pegs. Hang those knee sleeves outside after every session! Biggest fashion mistake you’ve ever made: I had a look-a-like Top Gun flight jacket in my teenage years and still miss it! Desert boots with rolled down long socks were also a particularly bad stage of the 80’s.

Favourite quote: Soooo many: Get up Kim! No rep Berny. Seriously, it goes something like: People fail more often from want of perseverance than want of talent.

What’s your fav 90s jam? Mid/late 90’s were my uni years and I spent a year in the US, so there are a lot of anthems that mean a lot. Smashing Pumpkins, Gwen Stefani, Nada Surf, Fugees, Bone Thugs’n’Harmony, Smash Mouth, Pearl Jam. Nirvana Lithium is still my favourite though!

Last thing you watched on TV? If Netflix counts it was the Never Ending Story with Scarlett

Funniest thing that happened to you recently? Hasn’t been a funny year. Nah – it’s pretty easy with a 5yo. Scarlett getting wrapped in bubble wrap by Berny and Lauren until she was a human glad wrap role was pretty funny (someone has video footage). Scarlett covering her arms and most of her body in chalk. But the best was probably having Scarlett having a bit of a toilet accident at a cafe and Lingee trying to help out. Not sure who was more upset, but Scarlett seemed ok.

Most used emoji? Blue thumbs up or grimace face.

If you could have one other CrossFit Claremont members body part, what would it be? Wacey’s engine, Matty B’s chest or Liz’s rowing noises…

Unfortunately due to the 3v3 Showdown changing their days - this weekend we will have a modified schedule:
