Saturday 03.02.18 - Member of the Month 2/2: Matt Blycha

Congrats to the second member of the month - Matt Blycha (Big Matty).
 

 

 
Big Matty has been a part of the scenery for as long as anyone. I remember he used to just come in to Squat and Deadlift, he was already pretty strong and eventually I managed to coax him into some WODs.
 

 

 
For a guy with a schedule as busy as him, it's pretty amazing the times and lifts he puts up! For people coming later in the day Big Matty's score is always a solid benchmark and tough to beat. A really great guy to have around, Matty just keeps getting better.
 

 
When, how and why did you get started with us? Long ago. I started when SXF Nedlands was Vault Fitness (that's even before Jaso's arrival). I spotted some pommel horses and ropes hanging from the ceiling and thought it looked more interesting than what I'd been doing, which at the time was showing up the retirees who frequented the UWA gym at 6am. I avoided CrossFit initially and stuck to my boring 5/3/1 training as I thought CrossFit would make me weaker. But eventually I did one class a week, then two, then as many as I could…
 

 

 
What would be your dream workout? Longer work outs with lots of gymnastics / heavier movements. Nate's a good one.
 

 
What workout would you want to avoid? Pure cardio stuff not much variation. 5K run comes to mind.
 

 
Favourite CrossFit Athlete? Rach Davis probably. She always pushes herself. I think most of the good female athletes actually seem to push harder than the guys.
 

 
Whats the best thing you own that cost under $100? Wace said last week he was going to sell me his spare grips to save my hands which are in shabby condition. Where are they mate?
 

 
Biggest fashion mistake you’ve ever made? I got some nice tropical shorts from the Wod life recently. My daughter saw them and said "OMG, are you serious? Dad, you can't." That's not the worst but probably the most recent.
 

 
Favourite quote? Too many to chose from but I'll go with – Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentations of their women. (From Conan the Barbarian if you were wondering)
 

 
What's Your fav 90s jam? Sir Psycho Sexy from the Chill Peppers. Timeless lyrics.
 

 
Last thing you watched on TV? Ned & Stacy maybe? Obviously that was a while ago.
 

 
Funniest thing that happened to you recently? 5 minutes after my daughter's crack about my shorts, one of my sons came home and said "Hello dad. You look like a middle aged man". My wife thought it was funny.
 

 
Most used emoji? Afraid I don’t much use the emoji.
 

 
If you could have one other CrossFit Claremont members body part, what would it be? Nass' sports an impressive moustache. I would have that if I could get away with it as he does.
